Much to my surprise, I found a replacement parts page for Shubb Capos that had the two parts I needed to fix up my old one for a dollar each with no shipping and handling--outstanding! I ordered them and within a few days I had my old capo fixed up good as new.

Solar Update

So our plans for solar seem to be stumped. We have some trees that block just a tad too much light for us to qualify for a rebate. Since those trees are in an environmetnal protection zone, we can't touch them (without spending around $10,000 on a review process). So in other words, our attempt to go green are thwarted because we're so darn green around here.

Solarize Me!

I've thought for a long time that it would be cool to have solar panels. I think, with Solarize SW Portland, it just may happen.

Angie

Dearest Angie:

You are beautifully crafted masterpiece; wonderfully created. This is a picture when he came with his grandparents to visit on Tuesday. He was very excited and gave her a little kiss.

We've been having to deal a bit with transitioning with this life change. Actually, it' probably got as much to do with the fact that Josiah hadn't seen much of his dad for five days. I spent most of today with him, building railroad track, playing and working outside, going to the park. He posted a YouTube clip of the intro to Knight Rider. As an eight to twelve year old boy when the show was in it original series run, I loved it. I admit it, I got chills down my back when I just watched the intro. I'm sure if I watched a show now, I would get a major laugh at how lame it was, but man that show was cool when I was kid.

It also brings back memories because my Grandpa Corcoran was the one to introduce the show to me. As I recall, I was staying over at Grandma and Grandpa's and he said something like "Have you seen this show? It's got some car." It's one of the more vivid memories I have of him.

Fun Day

Angie and Josiah came and visited me downtown today. It seemed like just about the time I started to get a feel for the song, it was over.

The surprise for me was when I picked up the djembe (drum) that Angie gave me for Christmas (and made by the talented Dave Keetah). You can learn more about techniques of drumming, vocal harmonies, vocal recording and guitar effects for example. Being in an audio format is great because you can hear examples of what they're talking about. Plus, there are more resources on the episode web pages.

It's been useful for me as a guitar player to get more insight into areas I might not be so familiar with on the specifics. Like most guys, a marriage course isn't on the top of my list of fun things to do, but I do recognize the important of working on marriage. A good and healthy marriage doesn't just naturally happen. Usually, once I get there, I enjoy the process anyway.

Anyway, tonight I learned that Angie has me pegged. We were supposed to go through a list of sixteen items and pick three that matter most to yourself, then pick three that matter most to your spouse. Anyway, I was just spending some time tonight looking at what I think is the Orion Nebula and then went to look for something else to look at, found a star that looked somewhat bright, and was a bit surprised to see that the "star" had rings. I put the higher power eye piece in and sure enough there it was, shining in all it's glory. I was partially inspired by recent posts by Chris and Troy of their work, I've also wanted to share things I'm working on for a while now too.

All in all, this is a bit jazzier then I usually tend toward, but I tend to associate jazz with Christmas and well, that’s where my mind was.

More details can be found here.

powered by ODEO

First Family Worship With Josiah

It was Josiah's first time in family worship at Ethnos Church on Sunday. I think he enjoyed it as well as can be expected for a new environment with a bunch of people around and after picking him up from his nap and throwing him in the car to drive there. The grogginess was just about wearing off as we left the gathering.

I was blessed to have him with us as we gathered as a community. I have to say I'm quite disappointed in the snow fall. I was hoping for blizzard conditions, treacherous mountain passes, and more importantly, being stuck over at my parents for an extended stay. No such luck however. There wasn't even a full inch of snow at my parents house. There was some packed snow going over Meacham in the Blue Mountains, but it was well plowed and sanded so it wasn't too exciting for someone who grew up in that sort of stuff.

Oh well, I had a fun time over there hanging out with family. The Smith Men watched the new Bond film. Pretty good--a different kind of Bond, but still good. Don't get me started with the whole "it's when he become 007, but set in today's time" thing though.

I visited my grandma while there too. That was quite saddening for me. She's been slowly deteriorating mentally for several years, but has taken a big turn for the worse recently. You can't really have a conversation with her now. The words sound like they make sense as they come out of her mouth, but they just don't add up to a complete thought.

Thanksgiving Trip to Eastern Oregon

I'm reporting from a few miles north-west from Haines, Oregon. Josiah's First Movie

We took Josiah to his first movie in a movie theater over the weekend. Well, I think it's safe to say it was a hit.

As a little background, we got Josiah a book of the movie "Cars", which has been a favorite. When Angie asked him what kind of a birthday party he wanted, he said a "race car" party, referring to Cars. So we thought it would be good to take him to the actual movie before his party.

So we took him to Valley Theater and had pizza there too. When I walked in with the pizza I saw him sitting in the over-sized chair that was about to eat him but he had the biggest eyes that were just glued to that big screen. He got so into it at one point that he was squealing and jabbering with excitement.

All the way home and until we finally got him into bed he was just jabbering about the movie. I've put up a little audio I recorded here for those who are interested: http://www.pacifier.com/~smithw/audio/Josiah%20Reviews%20the%20Movie%20Cars.mp3

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://weslysmith.blogspot.com/2006/10/cars-josiahs-first-movie.html' title='Cars! This is a GREAT opportunity to help Visible Grace- those donations really add up!

If you would like to buy a calendar, just go to www.VisibleGrace.org and click on 'buy a calendar!' in the top right corner. The information is a little out of date (it still says 'GRACEworks'), but it is all correct. You can follow this link to PayPal to buy a calendar for just $12. You can describe so many aspects of it using math and science. There is theory to describe how to put something together that "sounds good". That order and structure and way of analyzing in order to understand really appeals to me. But the best part is that music transcends all of this to be something so much more beautiful and meaningful than numbers, formula, and all understanding.

I think the whole universe is the same way. I've always been interested in the physics of things. I've been getting into astronomy and cosmology as of late and I'm just intrigued by the how things are work on a large scale. Dark matter, dark energy, black holes? Wow. But, better than all that, it does work and in just a way so that we can all live. Not only that, but things looks pretty spectacular from my limited, little perspective.

I Don't Need to Work Anymore

Earlier this week Josiah saw me getting ready for work and he said, "Don't go to work Daddy." So very different.
And why is this? What is it that makes us different? And why is this dangerous?
The short version is that geeks dig it when something doesn't work right because they get to dive in to the guts of the system to figure out what's going on.

Just a few minutes ago Angie sent me an email, obviously annoyed, because one of her applications wasn't working right. Her reaction was that of frustration because it was hampering her ability to do what she wanted to do. When I've run into the same problem on the same application before, my reaction was more along the lines of, "Oh, that's not right, let me see here, what can I do to fix...maybe here...oh yes that got things back. I wonder why it did that. Is there something I can do to hack together a fix so it won't do that again? I could report a bug, nah; maybe there's something I can change in the registry..."

Sorry Daddy

Josiah has been learning the proper usage of saying "I'm sorry" lately. We made a day trip out to the beach today and Josiah said, "Sorry Daddy, sorry Daddy!" as he crawled through my sandcastle pummeling it flat. Somehow I didn't get the feeling of a repentant heart there. Oh well, I guess we'll just start with using the words at the right time. Maybe the next step is to teach him to wait until after he's finished.

Bass Playin' Fool

I played bass at Westport Church out in Hillsboro this morning. It was good to play since I haven't played the bass anywhere for nearly a year.

I was filling in for their bassist who was out of town. I'm going to be playing a bit for them here and there for a while because they're a little short of bass and electric guitar players. I'm really excited to get a chance to play electric guitar because that's where my passion has been lately. I will say though, that it has been fun digging the bass out, dusting it off, and straping on that big slab of wood and letting the low notes rumble out. I'll get plenty of chances to play bass because I understand their bass player really likes playing electric guitar as well, so I want to make sure I give him a chance to fulfill that desire.

It's kind of an interesting story how I got connected with Westport so I'll try to give the condensed version. I'm subscribed to a email group called ChurchBass that has around 500 bass players on it from around the world. A message was sent out a few weeks ago that a church in Hillboro needed to borrow a bass amp for someone who was filling in on bass for them. I replied that I had one to borrow so that's how I got connected to Jamie, their Director of Worship Arts. The funny part was that the bass player turned out to be Todd of Ethnos fame.

Christian Musician Summit

I want to go to the Christian Musician Summit. Anyway, I just wanted them and anyone else who reads this to know that I think they are way cool.

I'm also proud of my mom for volunteering and currently being the president of the Eastern Oregon Museum.

Robert Fripp - Behind the scenes at Windows Vista recording session

At first, it seemed odd to me that Microsoft would go to the trouble and probably decent expense to get Robert Fripp in the studio to record sounds for the new version of Microsoft Windows (Vista): Robert Fripp - Behind the scenes at Windows Vista recording session

But it starts to make sense as I pondered what Robert Scoble points out:

I was sitting in the studio listening to Robert Fripp a few weeks back play for hours. Baggs X-Bridge (a piezo pickup) to get a pretty convincing acoustic guitar sound. The X-Bridge signal goes to a DTAR Mama Bear to pre-amp, neutralize piezo pickup unpleasantness, and add in acoustic guitar emulation as needed.

The Strat's magnetic pickups go into my DigiTech GNX4, which is just crazy all by itself. Sometimes I refer to it as my semi-portable MP3 player.

Anyway, I then mix in my piezo/Mama Bear signal into the GNX's line inputs so I can have straight acoustic sound, electric sound, or my favorite: the acoustic/electric blend. It's pretty fun and almost too flexible with all the tone-tweaking possibilities.

The signal currently is just going into my bass amp/cab--a Fender Bassman 60.

So no tubes--at least not yet...

New Blog

My boss's boss's boss's boss's boss has a blog now. He's learning how to blow bubbles under water and kick his feet. I'm starting to get caught off guard once in a while about how he is growing up. We visited friends this evening who just had their fourth boy. Seeing their baby reminded me how itty bitty Josiah used to be. Then, I look over at Josiah and he's running around playing with their other boys and having conversations. Well, psuedo-conversations anyway. One was talking about "army men" (which came out something like "em-en") and Josiah thought he was talking about M&Ms.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://weslysmith.blogspot.com/2006/04/april-what-happened-to-march.html' title='April? Too bad I won't see any at my house." Well by morning the snow level dropped to 300 feet and voila--there was snow. Here's a shot I took yesterday morning before it started warming up.

I knew Josiah would be excited so I delayed going in to work. When he woke up I took him to the window and he said, "Hey, snow!" After about a minute of him listing off all the things that had snow on them, he said, "I need my boots! I need my hat! I need my jammies off!" Unfortunately, I had to go to work, but he got to go out with his mommy. They built a snow man, a "Snow Mommy", and a "Snow Josiah."

Accomplished Through Grace

I led the singing and music this morning at West Hills Christian Church. It responded to a critic of the movie "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" who said that "Narnia represents everything that is most hateful about religion." The author, James Tonkow, said this:

This notion that we could want or need divine help is treated by Toynbee as a huge insult. Perhaps surprisingly, I think she understands a truth that eludes most Christians: the Christian Gospel is, in fact, the Great Insult. Our human spirits loath the Christian message because it offends our pride by demanding that before accepting Christ, we accept that we are spiritually and morally corrupt and impoverished.

and..

No wonder Toynbee is offended. I'm offended too. I'd prefer to think of myself as talented, capable, and at least a decent person, if not actually good. I want to accomplish what I can and receive the credit before God and other people. I suspect that you're that way too.

Yes, I'm that way too. I've always tried to be the best person I could be, and thought I was a pretty good person. Somewhere along the line however, I guess I realized that the best I have to offer falls a bit short on God's measuring stick.

Let's Get This Thing Rolling

OK, so I've been interested in this whole blog thing, and I actually started one over a year ago.
